How to calm and channel the energy of children with hyperactivity

We all know that children have much more intense energy than adults; that can surprise us after a hectic day when we expect them to fall exhausted and far from that it seems that they have energy to go on and on ... However, there are children who, beyond the natural energy that we would expect, have been endowed with an extra load, they are called hyperactive children. Parents should know how to channel the energy of children with hyperactivity to help the little one and create a good atmosphere at home.

How are hyperactive children? Here are some of the characteristics that they can present:

- They talk all the time and often they interrupt the others.

- They have difficulty staying seated.

- When they manage to be seated they continuously move their feet, hands or make noises with their mouths.

- They constantly moveThey jump, climb, run and sometimes wander mindlessly.

- Lose interest easily into one activity and continually jump to something else.

- They cannot resist the urge to touch everything around them.

- They may have social difficulties, since their hyperactivity can be annoying for other children.

- They often lose things, drop them or break them.

- They try to take apart the pieces of things and often they are not able to put them back together and they break down.

- At home they have difficulty following the rules.

- They don't finish what they start.

- They don't seem to listen when spoken to.

- They find it difficult to organize and are careless with details.

- They can have difficulty sleeping.

Hyperactivity is associated with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD)However, sometimes it is not necessarily part of the condition. There are children who, without the other factors that make up ADHD, may have an excess of energy that makes them appear hyperactive.

In any case, on many occasions, whatever the circumstance, this excess energy generates certain misunderstanding in those who are close and desperately realizing that they can never calm down, including of course their own parents.

Here are some ideas to keep you busy and help you manage your energy:

1. Keep communication open
Talk to them about what is happening to them and make them aware of what may be annoying for others so that they eventually achieve better self-regulation skills. Help them listen when someone asks them to stop doing something annoying and to interpret the non-verbal language of adults and children to stop any behavior that may generate rejection.

2. Agree on a password
Agree on a secret sign so that, in those moments when they are getting out of control, we can remind them that they have to regulate themselves.

3. Encourage them to play sports
Give them the opportunity to develop some physical activity that they enjoy on a daily basis. It is advisable to find a physical exercise that they can develop daily, enjoy and serve as a relief of their energy. Furthermore, this is one of the few contexts in which they can move without being restricted.

4. Give them a chance to move
In some contexts where we would naturally expect them to be sitting, such as when they are studying and have to memorize something, we can let them keep moving if they do better.

5. Discover your strengths and take advantage of them
Be open to discover what the talents of your children are and make spaces and material available to them. For example, if they are good with drawings or clay, have a notebook or cupcakes on hand so that at times when they are not allowed to move a lot, they can be entertained.

6. Anticipate situations
Whenever possible, it is necessary to talk with them before arriving at a place, about how long we will be there, what is allowed and what is not, and the type of behavior we expect from them.

7. Plan outdoor activities that allow mobility
On weekends or vacations it is worth looking for opportunities for places and spaces where they can move freely without as many restrictions as those that live daily at school and at home.

8. Reduce sugar
Not giving them a chance to eat a lot of sweets and sugary drinks for at least three hours before going to bed: This will only boost their energy and make it harder for them to sleep.

9. Ask for your support for everyday tasks
We can use their hyperactivity to keep them busy and also make them feel useful and collaborate in the housework such as: drying the dishes, fixing the closet, folding clothes, watering the plants and any task in which they can keep moving, but busy with something.

10. Establish routines
Despite their hyperactivity, we must not give up imposing those tasks that they must perform. The more consistent we are, the more we will help them. Also, predictable environments help them not to get out of control.

Being a hyperactive child is not easy, all the time they are receiving restrictions, all the time someone is asking them to stop, to be quiet, to stop moving, etc. On many occasions people move away from them and feel rejected even by their own friends. Our work as parents therefore becomes more complex. First we must accept our son as he is, work daily to help him fit properly in each of the scenarios in which he moves and at the same time find the balance to allow him to have a more comfortable margin of action and always feel loved and accepted.
